The starting pitchers for the game were Kevin Gausman for the Giants and Sandy Alcantara for the Marlins. Gausman had a strong start to the season, with a 2-0 record and a 1.29 ERA in his first two starts. TUE,APRIL 18
The game began with both pitchers looking sharp, as they retired the first three batters they faced. However, in the top of the second inning, the Giants broke through for three runs. Brandon Crawford started the inning with a single, and Buster Posey followed with a double to put runners on second and third. A single from Alex Dickerson brought home Crawford, and a sacrifice fly from Steven Duggar brought home Posey. A double from Donovan Solano then scored Dickerson, giving the Giants an early 3-0 lead.
Gausman continued to dominate the Marlins’ lineup, not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning when Starling Marte singled to left field. However, Gausman was able to work out of trouble and keep the score at 3-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Giants added to their lead. Duggar led off the inning with a single, and Solano followed with a double to put runners on second and third. A single from Evan Longoria brought home Duggar, and a groundout from Crawford brought home Solano, making the score 5-0 in favor of the Giants.
The Marlins were unable to mount any sort of comeback against Gausman, who went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven batters. Alcantara was pulled after five innings, having allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out four batters.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Giants added two more runs to their lead. Posey started the inning with a double, and Dickerson followed with a two-run home run, extending the Giants’ lead to 7-0.
The Marlins were able to push across a run against Giants’ reliever Jake McGee in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late, and the Giants secured the victory by a score of 7-1.
The Giants’ offense was led by Dickerson, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Posey also contributed with two doubles and two runs scored, while Solano went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Gausman’s dominant performance on the mound was the key to the Giants’ victory, as he was able to shut down the Marlins’ lineup and keep them off the scoreboard for most of the game.
Overall, it was a strong performance from the Giants, who improved their record to 7-6 on the season. Gausman continued to establish himself as one of the top pitchers in the league, while Dickerson and Posey showed why they are two of the most dangerous hitters in the Giants’ lineup. The Marlins, on the other hand, fell to 6-7 on the season and will need to regroup quickly if they hope to stay in the playoff race.
