The Austrian forward received the ball just outside the box, before unleashing a powerful shot that flew past the Gladbach goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net.
With the scoreline now tied at 2-2, both teams threw caution to the wind and went all out in search of a winner. It was end-to-end stuff in the final few minutes of the game, with chances being created at both ends.
But it was Mainz who had the final say, as Mateta scored his second goal of the game in the 89th minute to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for the home side. The French striker latched onto a cross from the left wing, before directing a header into the back of the net to send the Mainz fans wild with delight.
The final whistle blew shortly afterwards, bringing an end to a pulsating match that had kept the crowd on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Mainz had emerged victorious, but both teams deserved credit for putting on such an entertaining display of football.
