In his nearly nine years as a professional boxer, Marcelino Nicolas Lopez of Buenos Aires has made significant progress. He has won 31 of his 33 fights and established himself as a fighter to watch in the super lightweight division.
However, the talented 135-pounder hasn’t had an easy road because he’s fought good opponents throughout the notoriously tough Argentinean fight circuit.
Lopez has been fighting professionally since December 15, 2006, when he beat Juan Manuel Flores by unanimous decision. In his early years, he mostly fought in his hometown of Buenos Aires, where he quickly built a 10-0 record with four knockouts.
With a second-round knockout of 45-fight veteran Ricardo Chamorro in June 2008, he made it clear that he was about to begin his assault on the best fighters at 135 pounds. After five more victories, he quickly defeated his most difficult opponent to date, Javier Alvarez, a 35-8-1 opponent, stopping him in just two rounds on November 21, 2009.
As a result of that victory, he qualified for a fight on May 28, 2010, against Alberto Leopoldo Santillan, who held the vacant WBC Latino title. Once more, Lopez delivered under pressure, as he pounded out a hard-fought majority decision victory to win his first professional title.
In addition to adding the Argentina (FAB) title to his resume, Lopez went on to win six more fights for the WBC Latino title. Even though he lost to Pablo Martin Barboza by close decision in July 2014, he immediately won by knocking out Diego Martin Aguilera and Sergio Javier Escobar in his new weight class of 140 pounds.
The 29-year-old Lopez will fight for the first time in the United States on October 3 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, against an unidentified opponent. He is now prepared to begin his quest for a world title.
