TUE,APRIL 18
The starting pitchers for the game were Gerrit Cole for the Yankees and Shohei Ohtani for the Angels. Cole had struggled in his first two starts of the season, allowing a total of eight runs in just nine innings pitched. Ohtani, on the other hand, had been dominant on the mound, allowing just one run in 12 innings pitched while also hitting three home runs as a designated hitter.
The game began with both pitchers looking sharp, as they retired the first six batters they faced. However, in the top of the third inning, the Yankees broke through for two runs. DJ LeMahieu led off the inning with a double, and Aaron Judge followed with a walk. A single from Giancarlo Stanton brought home LeMahieu, and a sacrifice fly from Gleyber Torres brought home Judge, giving the Yankees an early 2-0 lead.
Cole continued to dominate the Angels’ lineup, not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning when Mike Trout singled to center field. However, Cole was able to work out of trouble and keep the score at 2-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Yankees added to their lead. Clint Frazier led off the inning with a double, and Kyle Higashioka followed with a single to put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly from LeMahieu brought home Frazier, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Yankees.
Ohtani was pulled after five innings, having allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six batters. He was replaced by reliever Aaron Slegers, who pitched two scoreless innings to keep the Angels within striking distance.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Yankees added two more runs to their lead. Stanton led off the inning with a double, and Torres followed with a single to put runners on the corners. A double from Frazier brought home Stanton, and a groundout from Higashioka brought home Torres, making the score 5-0 in favor of the Yankees.
Cole’s dominant performance on the mound was the key to the Yankees’ victory, as he went eight innings, allowing just two hits while striking out ten batters. Yankees’ reliever Chad Green allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late for the Angels, and the Yankees secured the victory by a score of 5-1.
The Yankees’ offense was led by Frazier, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Stanton also contributed with two doubles and a run scored, while LeMahieu went 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Cole’s dominant performance on the mound was the key to the Yankees’ victory, as he was able to shut down the Angels’ lineup and keep them off the scoreboard for most of the game.
Overall, it was a much-needed victory for the Yankees, who improved their record to 6-7 on the season. Cole’s dominant performance on the mound was a promising sign for the Yankees, who will need him to be at his best if they hope to make a playoff run. The Angels, on the other hand, fell to 5-8 on the season and will need to regroup quickly if they hope to stay in the playoff race.
