The 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will kickstart from today from 7.30 pm IST with a mouth-watering clash of star-studded defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and four-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
The Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, are one of the most successful teams in the IPL. They have won the tournament three times and have reached the playoffs in all but two seasons. The team was founded in 2008 and is owned by India Cements. In 2015, the team was suspended from the IPL for two years due to their involvement in a spot-fixing scandal. They returned to the league in 2018 and have been among the top-performing teams since then.
The rivalry between Gujarat and Chennai Super Kings started in 2016 when the two teams faced each other for the first time. It was the opening match of the IPL that year, and both teams were eager to start their campaign with a win. The match was held at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, the home ground of the Gujarat Lions. Chennai won the toss and chose to bat first. They posted a mammoth total of 182 runs in their 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant century by Brendon McCullum. In response, Gujarat could only manage 173 runs, falling short by 9 runs.
The second match between the two teams that year was held at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This time, Gujarat won the toss and chose to bat first. They put up a decent total of 176 runs, with Dwayne Smith scoring a brilliant half-century. Chennai’s reply got off to a poor start, with both their openers getting out cheaply. However, Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo played brilliantly, scoring half-centuries each to take Chennai to victory.
In the second season of the IPL, the two teams faced each other twice again. The first match was held in Rajkot, where Gujarat was playing their home games. This time, the Lions batted first and put up a total of 135 runs on the board. Chennai’s bowlers did an excellent job of restricting the Gujarat batsmen, with Ravindra Jadeja picking up three wickets. In reply, Chennai chased down the target with ease, winning the match by six wickets.
The second match between the two teams that year was held in Chennai. Gujarat batted first and scored a competitive total of 192 runs, with Brendon McCullum once again playing a brilliant innings. In reply, Chennai got off to a shaky start, losing three wickets in the first three overs. However, Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo played brilliantly, scoring half-centuries each to take Chennai to victory.
