The Cardinals tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring one run and putting runners on second and third base with only one out. However, Nationals closer Brad Hand was able to get the next two batters out to secure the 4-2 victory for Washington.
Erick Fedde pitched well for the Nationals, going six innings and allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven batters. Brad Hand earned the save for Washington, his 19th of the season.
For the Cardinals, Kwang-Hyun Kim pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four batters. Cardinals reliever Andrew Miller was charged with the loss after giving up two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
The Nationals were led by Josh Bell, who had a big game at the plate, going 2-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Juan Soto also contributed with a home run and an RBI.
