On April 7th, 2023, the Cincinnati Reds faced off against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Both teams were coming off losses in their opening games of the season and were looking to even up their records.
The Reds sent right-hander Luis Castillo to the mound, while the Phillies countered with left-hander Aaron Nola. Both pitchers had solid outings, but it was the Phillies’ offense that ultimately made the difference in the game.
FRI,APRIL 7
The Phillies got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, when left fielder Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI single to score third baseman Alec Bohm. The Reds tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, when right fielder Nick Castellanos hit an RBI single to score first baseman Joey Votto.
The Phillies retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, when center fielder Odubel Herrera hit an RBI single to score second baseman Jean Segura. They added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, when shortstop Didi Gregorius hit a solo home run to right field.
The Reds had a chance to cut into the Phillies’ lead in the top of the seventh inning, when they loaded the bases with two outs. However, Phillies reliever Hector Neris was able to get out of the jam by striking out center fielder Nick Senzel.
The Phillies added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when pinch hitter Brad Miller hit an RBI single to score catcher Andrew Knapp. Reds closer Amir Garrett was able to strike out the side in the ninth inning, but the damage had already been done.
One of the key factors in the Phillies’ victory was their offense’s ability to come up with timely hits. Andrew McCutchen’s RBI single and Odubel Herrera’s RBI single proved to be key hits in the game, while Didi Gregorius’ home run provided some extra insurance.
In contrast, the Reds struggled to come up with timely hits throughout the game. Despite loading the bases in the seventh inning, they were not able to capitalize on the opportunity and tie the game. They will be looking to improve their offensive performance in their upcoming games.
Another key factor in the game was the Phillies’ bullpen’s ability to shut down the Reds’ offense. After Aaron Nola’s solid outing, the Phillies’ bullpen of Hector Neris, Archie Bradley, and Jose Alvarado combined for three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters.
In conclusion, the Philadelphia Phillies’ victory over the Cincinnati Reds was a result of timely hitting and strong bullpen performance. The Phillies will be looking to build on their first win of the season, while the Reds will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming games.
