The Houston Roughnecks and Arlington Renegades are two of the eight teams that make up the XFL, a professional American football league. The XFL was established in 2001, but it folded after just one season due to low ratings and financial difficulties. The league was revived in 2020 and has since gained a significant following.
The Houston Roughnecks are based in Houston, Texas, and play their home games at TDECU Stadium, a 40,000-seat stadium located on the campus of the University of Houston. The team is coached by June Jones, a veteran coach who has worked with teams like the Atlanta Falcons, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Roughnecks had a strong start to their XFL campaign, winning their first five games of the season against the Los Angeles Wildcats, the St. Louis BattleHawks, the Tampa Bay Vipers, the Dallas Renegades, and the Seattle Dragons. They were the only undefeated team in the league at the time and quickly established themselves as one of the favorites to win the XFL championship.
The Arlington Renegades, on the other hand, are based in Arlington, Texas, and play their home games at Globe Life Park, a 48,000-seat stadium that was formerly the home of the Texas Rangers baseball team. The team is coached by Bob Stoops, a former head coach at the University of Oklahoma who led the Sooners to a national championship in 2000.
The Renegades had a mixed start to their XFL campaign, winning their first game of the season against the St. Louis BattleHawks before losing their next two games to the Los Angeles Wildcats and the Seattle Dragons. They bounced back in the following weeks, winning their next two games against the New York Guardians and the D.C. Defenders.
When the Houston Roughnecks and Arlington Renegades faced off in their regular season game, both teams were looking to maintain their momentum and secure their position in the XFL playoffs. The Roughnecks were the clear favorites, given their undefeated record and dominant performances throughout the season, but the Renegades were not to be underestimated.
The game started off with a bang, as the Roughnecks scored a touchdown on their opening drive. The Renegades responded with a field goal on their first possession, but the Roughnecks quickly took control of the game, scoring two more touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 21-3 lead.
The Renegades were able to score a touchdown of their own in the second quarter, but the Roughnecks continued to pile on the points, scoring two more touchdowns before halftime to take a commanding 35-10 lead.
In the second half, the Renegades were able to mount a comeback, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter to cut the Roughnecks’ lead to 35-24. However, the Roughnecks were able to respond with a touchdown of their own, putting the game out of reach.
The Roughnecks continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, scoring two more touchdowns and a field goal to extend their lead to 56-24. The Renegades were able to score a late touchdown, but it was too little, too late, as the Roughnecks cruised to a 56-31 victory.
The Roughnecks were led by their star quarterback, P.J. Walker, who threw for 239 yards and five touchdowns in the game. Walker had been one of the most impressive players in the XFL throughout the season, throwing for over 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns in the first five games of the season.
